A Learning Enthusiast

Everyone in the class knows Xia Tao is a high achiever though the semester has passed less than a month. It is thus believed that Xia Tao would win the speech contest held by Guizhou University of Finance and Economics and he finally did it.

Xia Tao is able to keep learning anytime and anywhere—and he always does——wherever he is, dormitory, library or canteen, and whatever he does, on the way to get the express, having dinner, even on the school bus. For many people, playground, is definitely not a place to focus on learning. But for Xia Tao, it’s a place where he can still memorize English words, watch English texts and so on.

Xia Tao has shown the characteristic of being hardly distracted when he was focusing on learning during the military training. At the beginning, many people thought that Xia Tao was just a diligent student. However, no one would have thought how diligent he is. While everyone was catching the chance to have a short break during the exhausting military training, He was founded taking out his mobile phone, and opening an APP for learning English. Everybody knew he meant real.

After the military training, everyone begins their own study. We found that Xia Tao is always studying in most of the time whenever you meet him. Some students ask him, “Under the noisy environment, how do you keep learning?” Xia Tao said: “I think the most important thing is whether a person really wants to study and whether he wants to do something. If you can be firm in your heart, the external environment, in fact, cannot interfere with you.” When asked about his plans for the future, Xia Tao said that he has a clear plan in the following three years as well as his plans after graduation.

God Help Those Who Help Themselves

He who is diligent and clever will not be treated badly. During Xia Tao’s undergraduate, he passed TEM-4, BEC Vantage, CET-6, CATTI-3 and obtained English Tour Guide Certificate. He won the first prize in the interpretation contest and the English debate competition held by his undergraduate school. He also got an excellent score of 370 in the MTI postgraduate examination of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies in 2020. In addition, in this English speech competition, Xia Tao won the first prize of the whole school with the highest score. And he will represent GUFE to participate in the next competition in Guizhou province.

Achievement is founded on diligence and wasted upon recklessness, and Xia Tao is such a vivid example. Some students asked Xia Tao about how he planned his trivial time and Xia Tao said that there is actually no fixed specific arrangement to study English. Listening to English in trivial time usually has a purpose. For example, during the various examinations, he will seize the time to listen more; he treats it as “grinding ears” at ordinary times. In the trivial time of learning, he will not give himself too much exhausting energy tasks because in the trivial time, it is very difficult to learn. In this situation, it’s better to choose something that doesn’t require too much brain power, such as trying to remember some words or recite some phrases and so on.                       Aspiration of Xia Tao

Xia Tao’s goal is to become a professional interpreter. “In fact, to be a professional interpreter is easy said than done. Either translation or interpretation needs the one to be proficient and to reach a very high level of language. Actually, there still has a long way to go to reach the goal which should to be realized step by step. Instead of being a relatively low-end interpreter, it has been replaced by the continuous development of technology. I want to be the kind of interpreter that won’t be replaced by machines. Therefore, I am running for this goal in the effort. Since I have read the major of translation, I must walk the road of translation in the future. I have heard from my teacher that many people are determined to be the kind of interpreter they want to be at the beginning but they can’t hold on to it. I have to stick to it in order to achieve the initial goal. ”

Challenges and Motivation

As he said in this speech contest: “it is my great pleasure to join this competition. Actually, it is my first normal speech, so this is brand new challenge. I am a participant, a listener and a learner in the competition. It does improve my ability and I will go ahead and make challenges be the motive ahead.” I am so grateful to my tutor, Professor Lei Qinglan, for giving me her careful guidance. I also want to give my thanks to Mrs. Xiao and classmates for their help and encouragement!

This is the word from Xia Tao–I will go ahead and strive to turn challenges into motivation. If possible, try to make it be your word!
