Your ad in the Saturday Review of Literature says that you specialize in out-of-print books. The phrase"antiquarian book-sellers"scares me somewhat,as I equate "antique" with expensive. I am a poor writer with an antiquarian taste in books and all the things I want are impossible to get over here except in very expensive rare editions,or in Barnes& Noble's grimy,marked-up schoolboy copies.

I enclose a list of my most pressing problems. If you have clean secondhand copies of any of the books on the list,for no more than $5.00 each,will you consider this a purchase order and send them to me?

作 者 简 介

海莲·汉芙(Helene Hanff，1916-1997)，1916年4月15日出生于美国费城。绝大部分的岁月都在曼哈顿岛渡过，一生潦倒困窘。汉芙生前从事最多的工作乃是为剧团修审剧本，并曾为若干电视影集撰写剧本。主要的著作有:日记体的纽约市导览《我眼中的苹果》(Apple of my Eye, 1977)、半自传的《别脚混剧圈》(Underfoot in Show Business, 1980)、传记《Q的传奇》(Q's Legacy, 1985)、《纽约来鸿》(Letter From New York, 1992)以及一系列以少年为对象的美国历史读物。书信集《查令十字街84号》于 1970 年首版问世，旋即被爱书人奉为经典；英国版则于次年出版，同样在英伦地区引起回响。
